Australia’s Top 3

- Natural catastrophes
Ransomware attacks continued through 2024, targeting sensitive data to increase financial leverage on companies. It remains the top cause of cyber insurance loss, accounting for 58% of the value of large cyber claims (> 1m euros).
Top 5 Cyber Risks
Within the category of Cyber Incidents, the top 5 risks were identified as:
- Data breaches
- Cyber attacks on critical infrastructure and physical assets
- Increase in malware / ransomware
- Disruption from the failure of digital supply chains
- Increase in business email spoofing attacks
Increased Risk from AI
AI is advancing rapidly, even in tech terms, leaving companies with little choice but to adopt it to stay relevant. This can lead to an unmanaged and chaotic approach, where companies have little control over, or even visibility of, the AI toolsets in use. A managed approach to this is critical to avoid unnecessary risks.
Benefits of AI vs Risks
Of the respondents to the report:
- 50% said AI brought more benefits than risks
- 15% said the opposite
- The remaining 35% sat squarely on the fence
Whilst there are significantly more who believe the benefits outweigh the risks (as they should when carefully managed), these numbers acknowledge the inherent risk.
